A Petisqueira Portuguese restaurant in Macau

29 April 2011

A small, unpretentious restaurant just off Taipa Village’s main road, on the corner of Rua de S. João and Rua das Virtudes, A Petisqueira offers typical Portuguese fare, including charcoal grilled, roasted, or boiled codfish; grilled sole with lemon butter sauce; grilled king prawns; paella; fried tenderloin steak Portuguese-style; grilled sea bass; and curried crab. The fresh cheeses are especially recommended. Of course, everything tastes better with Portuguese wine.

The homely white and checkered tablecloth, blue porcelain dishes and heady smell of Portuguese spices make you feel like you’ve stepped into a Portuguese family’s home. Fully booked on most nights, dinner is when the restaurant gets noisy with chatter and laughter, when groups of Portuguese and Macanese friends dine for hours and enjoy jugs of sangria.

Portuguese Chef Jose, who is also the owner, has been serving up Portuguese food for the past 16 years at A Petisqueria. Spices are imported directly from Portugal so you can expect authentic fare, although if you’re not used to the salty Portuguese flavors, ask the waiters to go easy on the salt when placing your order.

Expect generous portions. The fragrant Bacalhau codfish, thick and juicy tenderloin steak and tasty spicy prawns with garlic are must-tries. There Portuguese desserts are worth saving space for.

The casual environment means the manager is often found wandering round from table to table greeting guests and asking for feedback about the food. The waiters are friendly and helpful, without being overly pushy. There is no pressure to leave straight after your meal – in fact, diners often sit for hours enjoying wine and conversations with waiters occasionally popping by to top up drinks.
