CentralWorld Shopping mall in Bangkok

3 July 2009

800px-CentralWorld-Dec2006CentralWorld is the largest shopping mall complex in Southeast Asia. The complex includes a hotel and office tower. In 2006, after three years of design and renovation, the expanded, 550,000 square metres of shopping mall and 1,024,000 square metres of complex was opened, topping its nearby rival Siam Paragon in terms of size.

The renovated complex aims to attract 150,000 customers per day, purchasing more than 7 billion baht annually. It markets itself as a middle class shopping center, opposed to the upper class-marketed Siam Paragon.

From the outside, Central World looks like a rectangular large box. In front there is a large rectangular square. The largest outdoor activity square in downtown Bangkok covers an area of 8,000 square metres, which is ideal for large-scale activities. It has 400 dancing fountain heads incorporated into the plaza and can accommodate up to 100,000 people per day. In the evening, huge crowds often gather here to have a drink in the open air bars. With New Year’s Eve probably the largest gathering of Thai people can be seen there, seeing out the old year. Especially during the ‘cold’ season, the plaza turns into an enormous ‘beer garden’.

A booklet we obtained mentions that there are more than 500 shops at Central World, and no less than 80 restaurants. Famous international brands and Thai brands are well represented. Furthermore, there are quite a few smaller local brand outlets. Generally the stores are large. As is often the case in such a large shopping complex, Central World looks less than crowded, especially when you visit the upper floors.

We suggest to go to CentralWorld for some hours of relax and to have launch in one of the 80 different restaurants and bars. From Mc Donald’s to Italian restaurant, from Thai exclusive cuisine to American Donuts everybody can find the favorite food. Floors 6 and 7 are dedicated to food but you can also find some particular attractions on floor 3. On a side of the building there is Zen a shop with 7 floors and 50.000 square meters. A must see shop with dedicated floors to the different needs of men, women and children. On the ground floor you can find the DJ console and speakers that broadcast music and information on all the shop.
